General Information

Where is the location of the training?
Providence, Rhode Island

What are the dates of the training?
March 10-11, 2010

Why offer a training to American Sign Language Interpreters and Certified Deaf Interpreters on domestic and sexual violence?
Domestic and sexual violence occur in our communities at epidemic rates. It is estimated that a woman is battered by an intimate partner every two minutes; and one in four women will experience sexual violence in her lifetime. Deaf women are just as likely as hearing women to experience violence and abuse, but they face significant cultural and communication barriers when attempting to access the services they need. As such, interpreters provide a critical link to services and supports for Deaf women who experience violence. Being able to interpret effectively in contexts involving domestic and sexual violence requires in-depth knowledge and understanding of domestic and sexual violence and the systems that survivors turn to for support, as well as specific interpreting skills that help maintain the safety of everyone involved. This training is designed to provide this knowledge and skills.

What can I expect during the training?
The training will provide a hands-on, intensive learning environment, and will last from 8:00am to 5:00pm each day with time for breaks and lunches. The training will provide participants with information and skills necessary for interpreting for Deaf survivors, and, importantly, activities to apply what they’ve learned and begin to incorporate these skills into their interpreting. A variety of techniques will be used to accommodate the array of learning styles participants may have. These include the use of multi-media, presentations, facilitated discussions, and individual and group exercises. There will also be opportunities for participants to network with their peers and the faculty.

Can I still apply to attend?
We have reached capacity for participation in this training and therefore are no longer accepting applications. Those already selected to attend this training represent a diverse set of qualified American Sign Language Interpreters and Certified Deaf Interpreters from across the country. Through their application process, they illustrated their qualifications as an interpreter, their interests in attending this training, and their plans for integrating the lessons learned from this training into their work.

What are the expenses associated with the training?
There is no registration fee and the Vera Institute will cover the cost of accepted participants’ lodging for up to three nights (unless otherwise arranged). Additionally, a continental breakfast will be served each morning and lunch will be provided on Thursday. Your expenses, therefore, are limited to the cost of transportation to Providence, meals, and incidentals.

Will I be able to receive continuing education credits (CEU’s) for the training?

We expect that accepted participants will be able to receive a minimum of 1.4 CEUs for successful completion of this training.
