Interpreting Effectively & Safely for Deaf Survivors of Violence

The Vera Institute of Justice’s Accessing Safety Initiative and the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women are pleased to host this free training.

The Interpreting Effectively & Safely for Deaf Survivors of Violence training will provide qualified American Sign Language Interpreters and Certified Deaf Interpreters with information, skills, and connections to increase their capacity to interpret for Deaf people who have experienced domestic and sexual violence.

Participants will:

  • Increase their knowledge of domestic and sexual violence in the lives of Deaf women and the critical role interpreters play when Deaf women access community services;
  • Enhance their vocabulary, behavior, and ethical competency in settings involving domestic and/or sexual violence;
  • Gain strategies for maintaining survivors’ safety and their own safety when interpreting in these settings; and
  • Be more comfortable when working with survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence.

What is the agenda?

The agenda is designed to provide participants with a hands-on, intensive learning environment and the opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills for interpreting effectively and safely for Deaf people who have experienced domestic or sexual violence.

Who are the faculty?

The faculty for this training represent experienced interpreters and experts on domestic and sexual violence from the Deaf community.

Who are the participants?

Interpreters who were interested in attending this training submitted an application to be considered and selected to attend. Through their applications they illustrated their qualifications as an interpreter, their interests in attending this training, and their plans for integrating the lessons learned from this training into their work. After a thorough review of all of the applications, participants were selected. Those selected to attend this training represent a diverse set of qualified American Sign Language Interpreters and Certified Deaf Interpreters from across the country.
