To get ready for conducting a needs assessment, your collaboration must first develop an agreed upon vision and plan for the needs assessment. It is important that all the members of the collaboration understand from the beginning exactly why the needs assessment is being conducted, what issue is being addressed, and how the needs assessment will be conducted.

Initial Planning Questions

  • Who is responsible for conducting the needs assessment?
  • What resources are available to conduct the needs assessment?
  • What is the purpose of the needs assessment?
  • What are the goals and objectives of the needs assessment?
  • Who is the target audience of the assessment? In other words, whose needs are being assessed?
  • What type of information is needed? What questions need to be asked?
  • How will the information be used?

By clarifying these matters upfront, your collaboration will have all of the information it needs to stay focused on the true intent of the assessment.
