Step Six: Monitor Your Progress

The strategic planning document should specify who will be responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of the planning and implementation process. It is up to the collaboration as a whole to decide upon the methods for both monitoring and evaluation, as well as to define a timeframe for this work. The timing of such reviews depends on the work that is being completed, the needs of the team members and the overall timeframe of the project.

Evaluation Questions to Consider

  • Are goals and objectives being met?
  • Are they still realistic? Do they need to be adjusted or changed?
  • Should priorities be changed to put more focus on achieving something more specific?
  • Will they be achieved according to the timelines specified and with the resources specified in the strategic plan?
  • Should any deadlines be changed or differently managed?
  • Are the resources that were allocated adequate? How could they be better distributed?
  • What can be learned from the monitoring and evaluation process that can improve future work and future monitoring and evaluation efforts?

Document Findings

Finally, it is important to document the observations of any monitoring or evaluation. Answers to any of the evaluation questions, and a narrative of the current situation will be useful for making changes happen in the future, preparing for any recommendations that need to be made regarding the work’s projection, and sharing the feedback with the collaboration and community.
