The digital divide refers to those have regular and effective access to technology and those that don’t. It can refer to both access for individuals and resources that an organization has. There are resources for non-profits that can assist in acquiring and configuring technology. One of the primary organizations is Tech Soup
. They provide support encouragement and discounted resources to support a non-profit’s mission. It is a place to start in closing the digital divide.
The online environment can be a dangerous place. It stores enormous amounts of personal information that you may not be aware of. Even with information is deleted it may persist on servers that automatically back up the files. Information is shared between companies about users. Its mildest result is receiving spam in your email. Other outcomes can be far graver. It is possible to get even unlisted numbers by paying a fee to a company that tracks down people. Services once available only to legitimate law enforcement or detective agencies are now available to the general public.
It is difficult to protect oneself from the information sharing that is common. It is wise to be diligent and cautious about what information one chooses to share on the web.
Cyberstalking is threatening behavior or unwanted advances directed at another using the Internet and other devices or forms of technology. Cyberstalkers target their victims by making threatening or obscene e-mails or text messaging, hiding cameras, spamming, tracking her computer and internet activity, tracking her movement through GPS in cell phones, and in numerous other ways.
