Marilyn Smith

Marilyn Smith is founder and Executive Director of the Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services in Seattle. She received her B.A. in English and M.A. in Counseling from Gallaudet University in Washington, DC and has worked in the non-profit sector for over 30 years. From 1993 to 1997 she served on the national board of Deaf Women United and was Vice President of the National Association of the Deaf from 2002 – 2004.

Her pioneering work in the field of anti-violence has brought many awards including one from President Clinton, the Gallaudet University Alumni Association, the National Association of the Deaf and Deaf Women United. In 2003 she received the Ford Foundation’s Leadership for a Changing World award and in 2004 received an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Gallaudet University. She lectures throughout the United States and Canada on domestic violence, sexual abuse, board development, grant writing, and leadership.
