Sensory Functions

Overview

Sensory functions include vision, hearing, and touch. People experience limitations in each of these area and, sometimes, across these areas. Given the distinct nature of the limitations in each of these categories, you will find separate sections below to discuss each of them.

Note that knowing how many people have a sensory limitation and which type of sensory limitation can be very difficult. Prevalence of sensory limitations increases with age and many people do not acknowledge them. The U.S. Census cannot answer the question because it asks only if you have a “sensory impairment” lumping everyone together.
